Question 1:

Look at the graph below. In 25 seconds, please speak into the microphone and describe in detail what the graph is showing. You will have 40 seconds to give your response.

Suggested Answer:

The bar graph depicts the change in status of FDI for the 10-month period, from October 2014 to July 2015. Heavy fluctuation is seen in the quantum of Foreign Direct Investment. It touched the peak at 120 billion dollars in December 2014, before hitting the trough the very next month, at a meagre 13.9 billion dollars. There has been a steady rise after January 2015. It is even possible that the investment reaches the October 2014 level by October 2015. If that is found out, it would show the seasonal nature of FDI in China.

Question 2:

Look at the graph below. In 25 seconds, please speak into the microphone and describe in detail what the graph is showing. You will have 40 seconds to give your response.

Suggested Answer:

The line graph indicates change in the density of population per square mile in the US, during the 19th and 20th centuries. In 1860, there were 6,000 people per square mile. The numbers kept rising until 1940, except for a steep fall between 1870 and 1880. This fall might have been due to an epidemic, war or some other calamity. Between 1880 and 1940, however, the density kept rising steadily, touching the peak of 10,000 people per square mile. The next 40-year period, until 1980, again registered a steady decline, reaching the trough of fewer than 4,000 people per square mile before stabilising at around this figure.

Question 3:

Look at the graph below. In 25 seconds, please speak into the microphone and describe in detail what the graph is showing. You will have 40 seconds to give your response.

Suggested Answer:

The twin pie charts depict migration to and from the UK in 2007 for various reasons. The highest number – almost one-third of people – migrated to the UK for definite jobs. Another 12% came in the hope of landing a job. And 15% were possibly spouses accompanying the migrants, making it a total of 57% people immigrating for employment, prospective employment, or accompanying purpose. Over 25% migrated for formal studies. A total of 17% people either gave no reason or cited other reasons for immigration.
On the other hand, 64% people emigrating from the UK went for employment, prospective employment, or accompanying these employees. We can conclude that employment, prospective employment, or family-joining were the main reasons for both immigration to and emigration from the UK in 2007.

Question 4:

Look at the image below. In 25 seconds, please speak into the microphone and describe in detail what the image is showing. You will have 40 seconds to give your response.

Suggested Answer:

The image depicts the globe, along with the seven continents of the world, i.e. North America, South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia and Antarctica. While all the continents are shown in multiple colours, Antarctica is shown as pure white, probably to indicate that this is a frozen continent. It can be seen that Asia is the largest continent. Europe and Australia are shown to be much smaller in size. Antarctica also does not seem to be so big. Apart from the large land masses, there are so many islands, all surrounded by the seas and oceans of the world. The globe also uses the lines of longitude and latitude.

Question 5:

Look at the image below. In 25 seconds, please speak into the microphone and describe in detail what the image is showing. You will have 40 seconds to give your response.

Suggested Answer:

The image appears to depict a dockyard or a similar structure on the banks of a river or a large water body. There are bridges crisscrossing the water body, without any visible traffic. There are multi-storey structures visible, which do not appear residential, although the surrounding greenery might make it a serene place for residence. Most of the greenery, though, does not appear to be manicured for residential purposes. There is a part of the town on the other side of the water body. There is also a high modern tower visible in the background.

Question 6:

Look at the image below. In 25 seconds, please speak into the microphone and describe in detail what the image is showing. You will have 40 seconds to give your response.

Suggested Answer:

The image depicts a crowded marketplace. The market gives the look of a commercial street, with multi-storey buildings giving a cluttered look. There is hardly any space to walk around, yet there are two-wheelers and handcarts parked in a rather haphazard manner. Temporary canopies and shacks can be seen right across the street, giving the impression that the street has all but been occupied by the hawkers. A female shopper can be seen in the foreground, gesturing possibly towards something that she needs. There are also a couple of boys waiting for the elders to join them.
